In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
